Becoming a Trap Shooting Pro: A Starters Journey

When you first get to a trap shooting range it can be pretty overwhelming. The sound of shotguns going off is really loud. The clay targets are flying by fast. People are. Having a time, which makes it exciting but also a little scary, for new people. At Arrowhead Gun Club we think that if you learn the basics of trap shooting you will feel more confident and have a lot fun on the range whether you are trying to impress your friends or just learn how to do it.

Getting to Know the Trap Shooting Environment

If you want to get good at trap shooting you need to know how the range works. Usually people take turns shooting from spots and the clay targets come out of a house in front of them. The targets go in directions so you need to be able to move and aim really well.

At Arrowhead Gun Club we have all the gear you need like shotguns and bullets. If you have your stuff you can bring it.. Do not forget to wear safety glasses and ear protection. It is really helpful to watch people who're good at trap shooting because they can show you things that you might not figure out on your own.

You need to know how the trap works. Since the targets can come out at distances you need to adjust your aim. This makes the game more fun because every time you shoot is different. If you know how the trap works you will be better at guessing where the targets will go.

Finding Your Stance and Grip

How you stand and hold the shotgun is really important for hitting the targets and being comfortable. Stand with your feet apart with one foot a little in front of the other. Slightly bend your knees and lean forward so you can move quickly when the target comes out.

Hold the shotgun firmly. Not too tightly. If you hold it too tight your arms and shoulders will get tired. It will be harder to aim. Put your hand on the handle. Use your other hand to steady the shotgun. Try out ways of holding the shotgun against your shoulder so you can handle the kickback better.

Make sure your head is in the position so you can see the targets clearly. This is really important for aiming.

Aiming: Tips for Success

Aiming is something you get better at with practice. A lot of people just look at the target. You should look at the front of the shotgun instead. Line up the shotgun with the target so you have a reference point. You also need to aim a little of the target because it is moving fast.

To get better at aiming practice following the target with your eyes before you shoot. Keep your focus and stance the same even after you shoot. This is called "follow-through ". It helps you hit the target often.

Prioritizing Safety in Trap Shooting

Gun safety is really important. At Arrowhead Gun Club we want everyone to be safe. Always treat the shotgun like it is loaded. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot and listen to the range commands. Remember to point the shotgun down the range and never turn your back on the people shooting.

Before you shoot make sure the area is safe and clear. If you are not sure about something ask someone who knows what they are doing. Following the safety rules keeps you safe. It makes the game more fun for everyone.

Engaging with the Trap Shooting Community

The people in the trap shooting community are really friendly. When you join Arrowhead Gun Club you become part of a group of people who love shooting sports and taking care of the environment. A lot of shooters are happy to share their knowledge so it is easy for new people to learn.

Going to club events and training sessions is a way to get better. You can ask questions. Get feedback from shooters who love the sport just like you. The friends you make on the range can become friends outside of shooting

Taking Your First Shot

When you are ready it is time to take your shot. You might feel a little nervous. That is okay. Everyone starts somewhere. Take a breath focus on the target and pull the trigger smoothly. Every shot is a chance to learn. You will get better with practice.

Trap shooting is not about hitting targets it is, about having fun learning and meeting people. At Arrowhead Gun Club we are here to help you every step of the way. If you are patient work hard and have fun you will get really good at trap shooting. Set goals for yourself. Try to beat them.
